Jatropha curcas (Kattamanakku) is an oil plant. The botanic name Jatropha is derived from Greek, where "Jatras" means Doctor and "trophe" means Nutrition.

Jatropha, our primary bio diesel feedstock, originated in South America, where from ancient times extracts from its leaves and seeds were used as medicines. Jatropha vegetable oil can be extracted from the seeds by crushing them. It is inedible and has been used for centuries to make basic oil lamps. Until recently there have been major concentrated attempts to pioneer Jatropha as a commercial source of vegetable oil to make fuel.
